Another professor at IROC – congratulations to Prof. Dr. med. Theo G. Seiler!
We are delighted to announce that our corneal specialist, PD Dr. Theo G. Seiler, has been appointed professor at the Universität Bern with effect from 1 March 2026. This appointment recognises his many years of scientific work, his influential contribution to refractive and corneal surgery, and his commitment to teaching and training future doctors and ophthalmologists.
At IROC, Theo G. Seiler stands for the close connection between academic excellence and modern, patient-centred ophthalmology. He is passionate about advancing innovative treatment methods, regularly publishes scientific papers and is in demand internationally as a speaker. At the same time, he is deeply committed to training the next generation of ophthalmologists – a commitment that has an impact far beyond his own institute.
A small but charming side effect of this appointment is that his father, Prof. Dr. Dr. Theo Wolfgang Seiler, founder of the IROC, has held the title of professor for many years – and since both men have the same name, it will probably become even more challenging to tell them apart in future. Within our IROC family, we take it with a smile.
As a family business, this step fills us with particular pride. We warmly congratulate him on this significant milestone and look forward to continuing to shape the future of ophthalmology together.
Over 40 years of laser eye surgery at IROC – a pioneering achievement with a promising future
In 2006, SRF's news programme ‘10 vor 10’ reported on a special anniversary: 20 years of laser eye surgery in Switzerland. The report focused on the groundbreaking work of Prof. Dr. med. Dr. rer. nat. Theo W. Seiler, who performed refractive laser treatment clinically for the first time in 1985, thus opening a new chapter in ophthalmology.
Today – more than four decades later – we at the IROC Eye Institute Zurich look back with pride on this pioneering achievement. What once began as a visionary innovation is now an established, safe and highly precise procedure for correcting visual impairments such as short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism.
Since the first treatments, the technology has developed rapidly: from the early excimer laser systems to the most modern, individually tailored treatment methods. Despite all the technical advances, one thing remains unchanged: our commitment to the highest medical quality, scientific excellence and individual care for our patients.
For us, 40 years are not only an occasion to look back, but also to look ahead. Research, innovation and precision remain the cornerstones of our work – today as they were four decades ago.
We are making the historical TV report from 2006 available to you here as a historical document.

PD Dr. Theo G. Seiler at ‘Das Ophthalmologische Quartett’ – Premium Femto: Precision & Potential
The 23rd edition of Eyefox's talk show ‘Das Ophthalmologische Quartett’ (The Ophthalmological Quartet) focused on the topic of ‘Premium Femto: Precision & Potential’.
PD Dr. Seiler, ophthalmologist at IROC, participated in the discussion as an invited expert and presented two interesting cases from laser eye surgery and transplant surgery. In these cases, the use of the femtosecond laser in deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK or Femto-DALK) and in a follow-up correction after laser eye surgery performed some time ago was presented and classified from a technical perspective.
Eyefox is a German-language platform for ophthalmological specialist information, training and video content, providing a central point of contact for ophthalmological professionals. With around 3,000 subscribers, primarily ophthalmologists, it is an important continuing education medium in German-speaking ophthalmology.
IROC at the 25th Frankfurt Advanced Training Course for Refractive Surgery (FFRC)
At this year's 25th Frankfurt Advanced Training Course for Refractive Surgery (FFRC) of the University Eye Clinic in Frankfurt, our IROC ophthalmologist PD Dr. med. Theo G. Seiler presented the latest findings and clinical experiences with wavefront-guided transPRK in combination with crosslinking (CXL) for post-LASIK keratectasia.
In his presentation, PD Dr. med. Seiler showed how this individualised, wavefront-based laser treatment in combination with crosslinking (CXL) can stabilise the condition while improving vision by an average of more than 20%.
The FFRC is one of the most important German-language continuing education events in the field of refractive surgery and brings together specialists from clinics and practices every year to discuss current developments, techniques and research results.
New study confirms: The MS-39 is one of the most accurate corneal scanners in the world
Our IROC doctors — PD Dr. Dr. Jascha Wendelstein and PD Dr. Theo G. Seiler — have collaborated with international partners to investigate the repeatability of the MS-39 tomograph. A total of 600 measurements from 200 eyes were analysed.
The result:
Measurements of astigmatism, corneal curvature and total refractive power showed extremely high stability, with standard deviations of only 0.01–0.13 dioptres (depending on the corneal layer and model).
This makes the MS-39 one of the most reliable diagnostic systems in modern ophthalmology.
What does this mean for our patients at IROC?
We check our equipment regularly and work exclusively with technologies that have been proven to deliver the highest precision.
Thanks to the accurate measurements provided by the MS-39, we can:
Plan cataract operations and laser procedures even more precisely(especially for toric lenses and other premium lenses used in cataract surgery)
Minimise residual astigmatism after surgery
Predict refractive outcomes more reliably
Create individual treatment plans with maximum safety
Screen for keratoconus reliably
The study clearly shows:
The MS-39 provides extremely reliable diagnostics — and this directly leads to better vision quality and higher patient satisfaction after surgery.
New academic qualification: Dr. Dr. Jascha Wendelstein is now a private lecturer (PD)!
We are delighted to congratulate PD Dr. Dr. Jascha Wendelstein on successfully completing his habilitation thesis entitled “Modern calculation methods for selecting intraocular lenses in normal cases and in special situations” and on his appointment as a private lecturer (PD).
With a postdoctoral qualification, a physician demonstrates their special scientific qualifications and their ability to teach at a university. The award of the title “private lecturer” thus recognizes not only excellent research achievements but also a sustained commitment to academic teaching and the further development of the field.
PD Dr. Dr. Wendelstein stands for modern, evidence-based ophthalmology that combines clinical excellence with scientific innovation. His scientific work contributes significantly to the continuous development of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and their establishment at the highest level. In this way, he makes an important contribution to quality assurance and the future viability of ophthalmological care.
For our patients, this academic qualification means immediate added value*: the latest scientific findings flow directly into clinical practice*. At the same time, PD Dr. Dr. Wendelstein's teaching activities strengthen the training of young doctors and thus promote the sustainable transfer of expertise and experience.

Foundation and election as president of the SOG's Refractive Surgery Commission
The IROC Eye Clinic is taking Switzerland a big step forward in terms of quality assurance in refractive surgery.
We congratulate PD Dr. Theo Seiler on founding and being elected president of the Refractive Surgery Commission of the Swiss Ophthalmological Society (SOG)!
With the founding of the new Refractive Surgery Commission, the Swiss Ophthalmological Society (SOG) is sending a strong signal for quality, patient safety and professional development. It is the first commission of its kind in Switzerland to focus specifically on quality standards for refractive surgery. Our IROC ophthalmologist PD Dr. Theo Seiler, an internationally recognized expert in refractive surgery, was elected president.
The commission is based on the successful model of the Commission for Refractive Surgery (KRC) in Germany, which has been setting standards for medical qualifications and treatment standards for over 25 years. There have been no comparable structures in Switzerland to date – the establishment of the SOG Commission thus closes a gap in the area of quality assurance for refractive procedures such as laser eye surgery (PRK/LASIK, KLEx) and phakic lens implants.
The commission's goal is to develop evidence-based treatment recommendations and serve as a point of contact for patients experiencing complications. This is intended to support medical practice and increase patient safety. At the same time, it creates a sound basis for training and continuing education as well as professional guidance for ophthalmologists who work or wish to work in the field of refractive surgery.
The commission is chaired by PD Dr Theo Seiler, who has published extensively in this field and has driven forward the further development of KLEx and tailor-made excimer laser surgery. With over 4,000 laser eye surgeries performed annually, he and his team are leaders in Switzerland.
The establishment of this commission represents an important milestone for ophthalmology in Switzerland – it strengthens professional self-regulation, creates transparency for patients and promotes high-quality, future-oriented care.
New study provides standard values for corneal curvature for the first time
Our IROC ophthalmologist, PD Dr. med. Dr. med. Univ. Jascha Wendelstein, together with his international team, has published a groundbreaking scientific study:
For the first time, the stromal curvature of the cornea has been systematically measured and compared with the curvature of the anterior and posterior surfaces.
The ratio between anterior and stromal curvature remained remarkably stable across all measured zones.
Stromal and posterior curvature also proved to be very consistent.
This study thus provides reliable standard values for the first time, which are crucial for the optical analysis of the cornea.
The curvature of the deeper corneal layers (stroma and endothelium) plays a significant role in calculating the total refractive power – much more than has been considered in clinical routine to date.
Why is this important for you as a patient? ?
For you as a patient, this means greater safety, more individualised treatments and more precise visual results. These new standard values will enable new calculation methods in the future, resulting in:
Even more accurate planning of cataract operations (especially for cataract operations on eyes after laser surgery or in cases of keratoconus)
More accurate calculations of corneal refractive power
Better assessment of individual corneal profiles (especially in cases of previous surgery or irregularities)
More precise planning of corneal procedures such as laser surgery
New IROC study examines reading and visual performance after modern premium lens implantation
In a recent scientific study, our IROC team led by Priv.-Doz. Dr. med. Dr. med. univ. Jascha Wendelstein and Priv.-Doz. Dr. med. Theo Seiler, Prof. Dr. med. Maya Müller and Alex Ziörjen examined reading performance and visual acuity in patients after implantation of modern multifocal premium lenses.
What was examined?
Three months after the operation, 60 patients who had received premium lenses in both eyes, were examined regarding various visual functions. Their reading speed, visual acuity under different lighting conditions and everyday visual performance were tested.
Key findings of the study:
Under normal lighting conditions, patients were able to read fluently and comfortably.
In dim light, reading speed naturally decreased slightly – a completely normal effect that occurs in all people, not just those with artificial lenses
The study confirms that: visual performance is more than just a value on an eye chart. Everyday situations such as reading in dim light, working at a computer or driving at night play an important role in assessing visual comfort.
What does this mean for our patients at IROC?
These findings help us to provide you with even more personalized and realistic advice:
We take into account not only your classic visual acuity but also your personal visual habits in everyday life.
We explain transparently which lighting conditions are particularly relevant for optimal vision.
We will assist you in selecting the artificial lens that best suits your lifestyle.
The findings of this study are incorporated daily into the preliminary cataract examinations performed by all doctors at IROC, particularly in premium lens surgery. This is precisely the area of specialisation of our study author, Priv.-Doz. Dr. med. Dr. med. univ. Jascha Wendelstein, whose scientific expertise directly benefits our patients.
We also combine your requirements with state-of-the-art diagnostics to select the optimal artificial lens:
Aspheric monofocal lens (improved single vision artificial lens)
Toric artificial lens (correction of astigmatism)
Monofocal Plus artificial lens (slightly extended field of vision)
EDOF lens (extended field of vision)
Premium multifocal lens (complete field of vision)
Our aim is to ensure that the artificial lens you choose is perfectly suited to your everyday life, your hobbies and your visual needs.
Important for your confidence:
We continuously test and evaluate all artificial lens models we use under study conditions to ensure that we only use high-quality products with the best possible visual results for our patients.
Our goal is always: maximum visual comfort and highest satisfaction in everyday life.

IROC generational change: pioneer Prof. Dr. med. Dr. rer nat. Seiler undergoes surgery performed by his son
Four decades after the world's first laser eye surgery, which Prof. Dr. med. Dr. rer. nat. Theo W. Seiler performed himself in 1985, he has now undergone surgery and laser treatment himself – performed by his son, PD Dr. med. Theo G. Seiler. The operation took place in the anniversary year 2025, marking the 40th anniversary of this medical milestone. A special moment for the IROC and for the Seiler family.
The globally recognised pioneer of refractive surgery has had a decisive influence on the procedure over decades and trained generations of specialists. Last year, he confidently handed over the laser to his son. Because when the highest precision and deep trust are required, there is only one person he would consider: the next generation.
The operation was successful – and symbolises much more than medical skill: it represents a successful generational change at the IROC Eye Clinic Zurich, which has been setting international standards in refractive and anterior segment eye surgery for years.
New international study: Secondary lens implants in complex eyes
Secondary lens implants are among the most challenging procedures in cataract and refractive surgery. They are used when there is no longer sufficient capsular support – for example, after intraoperative complications, lens dislocations or previous eye operations.
PD Dr. med. Dr. med. univ. Jascha Wendelstein co-authored a new international study in collaboration with Kamran M. Riaz, Professor at the Dean McGee Eye Institute at the University of Oklahoma (USA), whose clinical and scientific work on complex cataract and IOL topics is internationally recognised.
This study analysed one of the largest case series on secondary lens implantations to date (over 350 eyes over a period of 7 years). Three established surgical procedures for the correction of aphakia were compared:
Anterior chamber lenses (AC-IOL)
Intrascleral fixed lenses (Yamane technique)
Scleral fixed, toric lenses with Gore-Tex suture
Key findings of the study
All three procedures can achieve good refractive and visual results
With careful indication, the safety profiles are comparable
However, the choice of technique and lens model influences the revision rate and residual astigmatism correction
Experience, technical understanding and individual case analysis are crucial for success
Significance for patients
The study shows that even in complex situations – such as in the absence of capsule support, lens dislocations or necessary lens revisions – very good visual outcomes can be achieved if:
the appropriate surgical procedure is specifically selected
modern fixation techniques are mastered
and lens calculation and surgical strategy are individually tailored
In addition to refractive cataract surgery, the clinical and scientific fields of activity of Priv. Doz. Dr. med. Dr. med. univ. Jascha Wendelstein also include complex lens revisions and secondary lens implantations – as a specialist centre for demanding lens operations at an international scientific level.
Publication in the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery:
New international publication: Avoiding calculation errors – understanding astigmatism correctly
The precise calculation of astigmatism is one of the key requirements for optimal results in modern cataract and refractive surgery.Even small calculation inaccuracies can have a clinically relevant effect on the visual outcome – especially with toric intraocular lenses.
The work was produced in collaboration with world-leading experts in cataract surgery and ophthalmic optics, including Achim Langenbucher, Peter Hoffmann, David Cooke, Damien Gatinel, Michael Goggin, Tun-Kuan Yeo and Thomas Olsen.
PD Dr. med. Dr. med. univ. Jascha Wendelstein co-authored a new international specialist publication that addresses precisely these calculation pitfalls in corneal astigmatism and presents practical solutions.
What the work is about:
Typical calculation errors in astigmatism analyses
Problematic simplifications in averaging, plane transformations and toric calculations
Why seemingly small mathematical deviations can become clinically relevant
And how these errors can be systematically avoided
The publication emphasises that modern cataract surgery today requires not only surgical precision but also optical-mathematical accuracy.Only those who recognise potential sources of error can select the optimal calculation strategy for each individual patient.
Publication in the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery:
